The Fayette County Conservation District and it’s partners held the ninth annual Children’s Water
Festival on Wednesday May 19, 2010. Thirty-four classes from fourteen schools attended the event.
The Fayette County Children’s Water Festival is a one-day educational event for sixth grade students
in Fayette County. The purpose being to educate children on many aspects of water in our lives
including, but not limited to, definitions of different water types, water’s importance to all life, the role of
the water cycle, and the effects of human activities on water and all of nature. This information, and
much more, is relayed through lively presentations, hands-on activities, and educational materials. The
goal is for children to retain this information for future use in the community and to share the information
with their family and friends.
Classes attending the festival can experience two exhibit halls (containing a variety of individual
booths), two keynote presentations and the Outdoor Experience. A few of the featured exhibits are:
live reptiles and amphibians, Fun with Crayfish, Watershed Model, Lock Model and Egg Adaptations.
Keynote presentations were " Water Water Everywhere" and “It’s a Wonderful Biodiverse Life”.
The Outdoor Experience Area is in its 2nd year at the Water Festival. It was designed to introduce
students to lifelong outdoor recreational activities, use their brains and get some exercise. Students
spent fifteen minutes at each station doing an activity and having the opportunity to earn a point for
their team. Every fifteen minutes students moved to another station and another fun activity. Possible
activities included fly fishing, snowshoeing, backpacking and river rafting.
Prior to the Festival, participating teachers receive an educational packet with resources to assist them
with follow-up activities. In order to assess the level of retention, teachers are asked to submit essays
from their students, detailing their day at the Water Festival. The Fayette County Children's Water
