The Fayette County Conservation District and it’s partners held the sixth annual Children’s Water Festival on Tuesday
April 24, 2007 at Divito Park. Over 30 classes (1,035 students) from sixteen schools attended the event.
The Fayette County Children’s Water Festival is a one-day educational event for sixth grade students in Fayette
County. The purpose being to educate children on many aspects of water in our lives including, but not limited to,
definitions of different water types, water’s importance to all life, the role of the water cycle, and the effects of human
activities on water and all of nature.
This information, and much more, is relayed through lively presentations, hands-on activities, and educational materials.
The goal is for children to retain this information for future use in the community and to share the information with their
family and friends.
Most classes attending the festival experienced two exhibit halls (containing a variety of individual booths) and two
keynote presentations. A few of the featured exhibits are: live reptiles and amphibians, Fun with Clams, Water-the
Farmer’s Friend, Fish Prints and Tracks, Non-Point Pollution Source Labyrinth, Laurel Caverns & Common Fish of
Fayette County. Keynote presentations were “Water Water Everywhere” and “It’s a Wonderful Biodiverse Life”.
Prior to the event, a pre-festival program is presented to all participating classes to review some water basics and
prepare the students for the day. Participating teachers receive an educational packet with resources to assist them
with follow-up activities. In order to assess the level of retention, teachers are asked to submit essays from their
students, detailing their day at the Water Festival. The Fayette County Children's Water Festival is a free event, and all
schools are encouraged to participate
