2007 Fayette County Envirothon
The Fayette County Conservation District held the 7th annual Fayette County Envirothon on Thursday May 4, 2007
at Ohiopyle State Park.  Twelve teams from the following schools participated in the day-long event:

Albert Gallatin Sr. High School
Connellsville Area Sr. High School
Connellsville Area Technical Center
Laurel Highlands Sr. High School
Uniontown Area Senior High School

The Envirothon is an environmental program for high school students in grades 9-12.  Five-member teams study
resource materials throughout the school year for five environmental stations: Aquatics, Forestry, Soils, Wildlife and
a Current Environmental Issue.  At the end of the year, all of the teams come together to assess their knowledge at
the County event.  Tests, worth 100 points each, are given to the teams at each individual station.  The team with
the highest cumulative score advances to the state competition.

Congratulations to the
Uniontown High School team for receiving the highest cumulative score at the event.  They
represented Fayette County at the
State Envirothon on May 22nd where they placed 10th out of 65 teams in the oral
component and 17th out of 65 teams overall!!

The team with the highest cumulative score at the Pennsylvania Envirothon will then advance to the Canon
Envirothon where over forty-five states and eight Canadian provinces are expected to participate.

We would like to thank the following agencies for assisting with the event:

Pennsylvania Game Commission
Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission
Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry
Ohiopyle State Park
Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection
Natural Resources Conservation Service

We would also like to thank Fayette Engineering Co, Inc., K2 Engineering and Geary Veterinary Services
for their generous donations.
The Envirothon is an environmental education program made available to Pennsylvania Conservation Districts in
partnership with related state and federal agencies and other organizations.  The Envirothon program is designed
to test high school students' knowledge of Pennsylvania natural resources and environmental sciences.  The
program emphasizes the importance of environmental sensitivity while stressing a need to achieve a social,
ecological, and economic balance.  The Pennsylvania Envirothon provides future generations with the ability to be
better equipped to address the complex natural resource concerns facing today's world as well as the challenge of
tomorrow.

The Envirothon program began in Pennsylvania as the "Envir-Olympics" in 1979 with three counties holding
competitions.  In 1984, the first State competition was held with six counties participating.  1988 marked an important
year in Envirothon history:  the event had grown to include thirty-eight teams; the program was officially changed to
"Envirothon"; and Pennsylvania planned, hosted and won the first National Envirothon.  Over 8,000 students now
participate each year and the program has grown to include every Conservation District in the state.
