The Conservation District offers numerous projects and educational opportunities, including various presentations and
community service projects, for Fayette County schools and community groups.  We strive to assist teachers in reaching
the goals of the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Environment and Ecology.

The Environmental Education Coordinator will work closely with each individual teacher/group to choose a topic and/or
activity suitable for that particular audience.

Videos are also available for teachers or groups to borrow.  To obtain a list of videos, or for additional information about
these or any other programs offered by the Conservation District, please contact
Heather Knupsky at

Various programs offered by the Conservation District
Project WILD - Project WILD is an interdisciplinary conservation and environmental education program emphasizing
wildlife.  The goal is to assist students of any age in developing awareness, knowledge, skills and commitment to result in
informed decisions, responsible behavior and constructive actions concerning wildlife and the environment.  Activities are
geared toward students in kindergarten through high school, and can assist teachers in meeting the Academic Standards
for Environment and Ecology.

Project Learning Tree (PLT) -   Project Learning Tree has been recognized as one of the premier environmental
education programs.  The mission of PLT is to increase students' understanding of our complex environment, to stimulate
critical and creative thinking, to develop the ability to make informed decisions on environmental issues, and to instill the
confidence and commitment to take responsible action on behalf of the environment.
Teacher Trainings are also held once a year in each of these programs.
Storm drain Stenciling Project - The Fayette County Conservation District continually seeks volunteers to participate
in our storm drain stenciling project.  This involves spray painting storm drains with the message “DO NOT DUMP,
DRAINS TO STREAM”, with the hopes of making Fayette County residents aware that pollution, including litter, entering
the County’s storm drains, is not filtered out before entering local waterways.  Educational brochures will be distributed
to area residents providing them with additional information about the project, the pollution problem and possible
solutions.  All materials will be provided by the Conservation District, and times and locations can be discussed to
accommodate your group.

Fayette County Children's Fishing Derby -  Two fishing derbies will be held in 2007.  One in the spring at the
Fairchance Community Park and the second later in the year at Dunlap Creek.  Check back for more details.
Children ages 15 and under can participate in the fishing derby.  Prizes are awarded and a picnic style lunch/dinner is
provided.
